Artist Statement – The Forms Dictate – 2008

The clean sheets of ink and delicate forms are deceivingly simple.

They start with a willing friend. Two lights are set casting distorted outer and inner shadows on the wall. Each model is asked to create both masculine and feminine forms. They twist, complain and laugh as both sexes arise. Digitally, I lift the shadows off the images creating a new cast of characters.

At minimum two characters are chosen from each model to move within restricted spaces. They dialogue with one another and produce an array of relationships – realistic, transcendent and archetypal. In the narratives, we recognize remnants of our own relationships. And within this process of deciphering we are challenged with questions of gender and the roles we play.
